Coronavirus continues to convey news of constant despair — spiking numbers are causing new lockdown rules in some areas where states cannot regain control of the virus. To reduce the spread, it is extremely important to monitor symptoms and get tested if you are experiencing symptoms or were exposed to the virus.

At first, the two widely-cited primary symptoms of Covid-19 were a high temperature and a new, continuous cough. Now, fever isn’t necessarily at the top of the list and is not a reliable indicator. However, there are many unique signs of the virus, which have appeared since its inception, including how the virus could affect one’s toes, eyes, stomach and ears.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has listed about 13 symptoms related to the novel coronavirus — the latest warning is a strange metallic taste in the mouth of those infected with COVID-19.

While the CDC doesn’t mention this specific symptom on their site, a statement released by the American Academy of Otolaryngology said, “There is rapidly accumulating anecdotal evidence that anosmia with resultant dysgeusia are frequently reported symptoms associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.” Dysgeusia refers to a distorted sense of taste, while anosmia is the partial or complete loss of the sense of smell. The academy also wrote that these symptoms, “should alert physicians to the possibility of COVID-19 infection and warrant serious consideration for self-isolation and testing of these individuals.”

Difficulties with a sense of taste can have a big impact on one’s health. Taste stimulates the desire to eat and therefore plays a key role in nutrition. The sense of taste helps us detect spoiled food or drinks. In many cases, a metallic taste may take a long time to go away. However, to alleviate this unpleasant taste, we developed MetaQil.
