ICYMI: What Are Taste Disorders?

ICYMI: September is World Alzheimer's Month | MetaQil

ICYMI: September is World Alzheimer’s Month. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. It is important to know that Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, meaning it worsens over time.

The main difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia is that dementia is a general term concerning memory loss or thinking skills, grouping symptoms together, whereas Alzheimer’s is a brain disease.

Causes of Alzheimer's Disease

While there is not one cause for Alzheimers most likely, there are several factors that may have a role, but every person can be affected differently. Here are some factors to be aware of:

  • Aging
  • Genetics
  • Research is still ongoing, but diet, education, and environment may

As of now, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s Disease, but there are some treatments that may help with its side effects.

Aging with Alzheimer’s

While Alzheimer’s Disease usually affects people over the age of 65, this does not indicate this disease is a normal part of the aging process. Alzheimer’s Disease causes the brain to shrink, and ultimately, brain cells die as a result. Common first signs of the disease are forgetting recent conversations or memories.

According to the CDC, in 2020, as many as 5.8 million Americans were living with Alzheimer’s Disease. This disease seriously affects one’s ability to complete daily functions.

Make Meal Time Easier

There may be multiple reasons why meal times are more difficult for someone with progressing Alzheimer’s. Some causes may be too many distractions, confusion if they previously ate, or just disliking the food in front of them. The Alzheimer’s Association offers the following tips to assist with mealtimes:

  • Eat together
  • Allow more than enough time to eat
  • Ensure the food temperature is not too hot
  • Encourage them to be as independent as possible
  • Adjust portion sizes if necessary to offset a decreased appetite

Alzheimer’s and Metallic Taste

Some people with Alzheimer’s have shared their experience of a bitter, unusual, or metallic taste or an altered smell. This can be a result of our sense of smell having been changed or lost, affecting how we consume foods. This is because smell and taste perceptions have been affected by Alzheimer’s, causing alterations of no smell, partial smell, or bad tastes.

As a result, it may be recommended to over season foods or eat sugary, saltier foods to compensate for the poor tastes. Unfortunately, this may lead to other health complications from inadequate nutrition intake.
